Self-Awareness First: The Simple Path to Energy, Performance, and Longevity

After thirty years of teaching breath control, mindful movement exercise at all levels of fitness, and peak performance, I have learned something simple:
Most people are looking for complicated answers to simple problems.
When we can smile and see the perfection of our imperfections, now thats a great mental outlook for the day.
Fools search for the perfect diet.
The perfect supplement.
The perfect technology.
The perfect shortcut.
Meanwhile, the basic fundamentals are waiting patiently.
Life is remarkably simple when we stay connected to the simple things.
For me, the path looks like this:
Self-Awareness → Energy → Breath Control → Mindful Movement → Performance → Longevity
Energy Is Number One
Without energy, everything becomes harder.
Thinking becomes harder.
Learning becomes harder.
Healing becomes harder.
Being patient becomes harder.
Being kind becomes harder.
Even getting started becomes harder.
Energy is the foundation.
Energy.
The first question I ask myself each day is not:
“What do I need to get done?”
The first question is:
“How is my energy today?”
Because the quality of my energy influences the quality of my decisions.
Self-Awareness Is Number Two
The older I get, the more convinced I become that self-awareness is one of the most valuable skills a human being can develop.
Know my patterns.
Know my strengths.
Know my weaknesses.
Know what gives me energy.
Know what takes it away.
Know which people help us grow.
Know which environments help us thrive.
Know when our mind is clear.
The goal is simple:
Know yourself better this year than you knew yourself last year.
Then repeat that process for the rest of your life.
Stop Fighting Yourself/ We are at War within ourselves
Many people spend years fighting themselves.
Fighting their thoughts.
Fighting their emotions.
Fighting their past.
Fighting their future.
What if the answer is not more fighting?
What if the answer is more self awareness?
Move With The Body with Self-Awareness
Movement is not punishment.
Movement is communication.
Walk/Hike/Run/Bike/Row/Swim/Ski/Whatever.
Lift Something.
Practice therapeutic yoga.
Plug Into Your Happy
One lesson nature teaches every day is that life is constantly renewing itself.
Humans can do the same.
Release the worry about your future.
Release the self-doubt about your past.
