The Sunk Cost Fallacy: Why Changing Our Minds Feels So Hard
The Emotional Brain Develops Before the Thinking Brain
This is huge for personal growth.
Have you ever stayed committed to something longer than you should have—not because it was right, but because you had already invested so much into it?
Time.
Energy.
Beliefs.
Identity.
Effort.
Love.
This experience has a name in psychology: the Sunk Cost Fallacy.
It happens when we continue moving forward with something simply because we have already invested so much in the past—even when new information suggests a different direction might serve us better.
This isn’t weakness.
This is brain wiring.
“Thank you for helping me get here. Now I’m ready to see differently”.
Here is something most people were never taught:
Much of our early understanding of the world forms before the Cerebral Cortex fully matures.
In childhood, experiences are processed primarily through the Limbic System, the brain’s center for safety, belonging, and emotional meaning.
Children don’t learn the world first through logic.
They learn the world through feeling.
Safety or danger.
Belonging or rejection.
Support or confusion.
These emotional impressions become the foundation for identity.
Later in life, when our thinking brain is fully developed, we assume our beliefs came from reasoning.
Often, they didn’t.
They came from early emotional learning.
Why Evidence Alone Doesn’t Change the Mind
When new information challenges something we learned early in life, the nervous system may not experience this as a helpful update.
Instead, it may feel like a threat.
Not a threat to intelligence.
A threat to safety.
So instead of asking:
Is this true now?
the body quietly asks:
Am I safe if this changes?
This is why intelligent people sometimes defend ideas even when evidence points in another direction.
The nervous system protects what once protected us.
The Brain Prefers Familiarity Over Accuracy
The human nervous system is designed to keep us safe, not necessarily to keep us correct.
Familiar patterns feel safe.
Predictable beliefs feel stable.
Consistent identity feels grounding.
So when something challenges those structures, the brain often chooses protection before curiosity.
This is where awareness training becomes essential.
Our Breath Creates Space Between the Past and the Present
A slow nasal inhale.
A longer relaxed nasal exhale.
This simple shift tells the nervous system:
You are safe right now.
When safety returns, something remarkable happens:
attention improves
flexibility improves
learning improves
curiosity returns
The thinking brain and emotional brain begin communicating again.
This is how we gently update old wiring without fighting ourselves.
Awareness Turns Protection Into Growth
The goal is not to eliminate emotional learning from childhood.
Those experiences shaped us.
They helped us survive.
But as adults, we gain something powerful:
the ability to notice our reactions before they become decisions
the ability to pause before defending old stories
the ability to breathe before choosing our next step
Awareness allows the past to inform us without controlling us.
And sometimes the strongest sentence a human being can say is:
Thank you for helping me get here. Now I’m ready to see differently.
